Typically the new TRD Pro color is announced at this auto show around Feb 13th. We were also expecting to see the new 2022 Third generation Toyota Tundra at this auto show as well. I really think that the 2022 TRD Pro color will be a BOLD pop of color, especially if this next generation Tundra actually has a TRD Pro model in its line up. The bold color would help the new pro stand out vs having a more earthy color like almost every color prior aside from Voodoo Blue have been. I was super impressed with this 2021 Toyota Tacoma and its off road capabilities. We were able to get this beautiful lunar rock color completely muddy! I know we don’t have crazy terrain here in FL, but for the rutted out trails and all the mud we had, the Tacoma handle it really well! I was in 2wd and 4HI most of the time. I never had to use crawl control, or it’s multi terrain select system. The fox suspension on this truck is SOOO smooth and plush. The stock goodyear tires are good, but not great. My full review of the new Defender is scheduled for the spring issue of Wheels Afield, and as that was contracted I can’t offer all my thoughts here. However, I can offer a few, and a general conclusion.

My basic conclusion (Roseann’s as well) is that if Land Rover had named this vehicle anything but “Defender,” Land Rover fanatics would have greeted it rapturously. It’s really only the heady baggage of that name that created the uproar.

Over the course of five days we employed it for everything from serious rock crawling to freeway driving, and everything in between. And it handled them all with more aplomb and balance than any vehicle either of us has experienced, including JLR’s own premium models.
